A section of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early on Tuesday morning after colliding with a huge boat, sending many cars into the river.

Authorities and rescue crews are working hard to save at least seven people who were affected by the tragedy. It appears that the vehicle collided with one of the bridge’s pillars, causing the road to break apart and fall into the sea. The ship also caught fire, spewing dense, dark smoke.
The head of communications for the Baltimore Fire Department, Kevin Cartwright, described the situation as a severe emergency. Noting the existence of cargo hanging from the bridge, he emphasized the need to rescue and recover people involved first.

Authorities are searching the water for the seven people who are thought to be impacted, however exact counts are still unknown. Referred to as a “developing mass casualty event,” Mr. Cartwright stated that numerous 911 calls were made when the ship struck a bridge column at approximately 1:30 in the morning.

Both Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. and Mayor Brandon M. Scott have attested to the start of emergency response activities and the ongoing nature of rescue efforts.

The I-695 Key Bridge will have all lanes closed in both directions, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority, and traffic will be diverted.
Established in 1977, the Francis Scott Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, an important river next to the Port of Baltimore, a major East Coast shipping hub.The bridge is named after the author of The Star-Spangled Banner.
