President Lazarus Chakwera announced Tuesday, June 11, 2024, as a national day of mourning.

Unfortunately, the crash killed everyone on board, according to a statement from the Office of the President and Cabinet.

The confirmation came after more than a day of searching in a forested area in northern Malawi’s mountains.

According to a statement from the president’s office, the Malawi Defense Force aircraft “went off the radar” after leaving Lilongwe, the country’s capital, on Monday, June 10, 2024.

According to reports, the president launched a search and rescue effort after aviation officials lost communication with the aircraft.

It was due to land at Mzuzu International Airport in the country’s northern area shortly after 10:00 a.m. local time (11:00 BST).

Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, postponed his planned journey to the Bahamas after learning about the incident.

Chakwera informed the public that Chilima, his wife, seven military personnel, and one extra passenger were on board a tiny military aircraft.
